Very short pulses of light are absorbed by pigment particles, fragmenting them so the body can gradually clear them. Q-switched or picosecond lasers are selected according to pigment colour. A single session rarely removes everything because pigment may sit at different depths and contain multiple components.
No exact number can be guaranteed. Noticeable clearing may occur after 2–4 sessions, while dense, repeatedly covered or resistant pigment may require 6–10 or more. Intervals are commonly at least 6–8 weeks to allow healing and gradual clearance.
PMU pigments are mixtures. Removing a dark component may reveal red, orange or yellow. Light, flesh-coloured, pink or white pigments containing iron or titanium oxides can sometimes darken paradoxically after laser exposure. A test spot and staged plan may therefore be appropriate.
The sensation is often compared with a rubber-band snap. Cooling and suitable anaesthesia improve comfort. Redness, swelling, tenderness, pinpoint bleeding or crusting may occur. Brow hairs can temporarily lighten.
Keep the area clean, do not pick crusts and avoid saunas, pools, intense exercise, sun and tanning until healed. Risks include hyper- or hypopigmentation, infection, scarring and incomplete removal. Increasing pain, pus, marked heat or fever requires medical advice.
Avoid treatment over active infection, herpes, open wounds or marked dermatitis. Pregnancy, photosensitising medication, recent tanning, keloid tendency, immunosuppression and impaired healing require individual assessment.
Can pigment be completely removed?

Will laser remove eyebrow hair?
