Dermapen Microneedling: How Does the Treatment Work, Is It Painful, and What Happens Afterwards?

Microneedling creates controlled microchannels with fine sterile needles and triggers a natural healing response with gradual collagen and elastin remodelling.

Microneedling creates controlled microchannels with fine sterile needles and triggers a natural healing response with gradual collagen and elastin remodelling. Dermapen refers to a powered pen-shaped device; MTS is a broader term for microneedling therapy.

Indications

It is commonly used for uneven texture, atrophic acne scars, fine lines, visible pores and general skin-quality improvement. It may form part of a pigmentation plan, but inappropriate settings or aftercare can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Procedure

After consultation, the skin is cleansed and disinfected and topical anaesthesia may be used. A single-use sterile cartridge treats the skin at a depth selected for the area and indication. Only products suitable for microneedling should be used. Cosmetics intended for intact skin must not automatically be delivered into microchannels.

Is it painful?

Sensation depends on depth, area and sensitivity. Superficial treatment usually feels prickly and warm; scar treatment can be more uncomfortable. Anaesthesia improves comfort, while the practitioner continues to monitor skin response.

Downtime

Skin may look red, feel warm and tight for several hours. Redness and tenderness commonly settle within 1–3 days; intensive treatment may cause dryness and flaking for longer. Use gentle care and SPF 30–50. Avoid acids, retinoids, saunas, pools and sun until recovered.

How many sessions?

A lighter skin-refresh plan differs from scar treatment. Scars and marked texture usually need several sessions spaced 4–6 weeks or longer. Collagen remodelling continues for months. Deep or tethered scars often need combination treatment.

Dermapen vs RF microneedling

Classic Dermapen is mechanical. RF microneedling additionally delivers radiofrequency energy through needles, producing controlled heat in the dermis. They are different procedures with different devices, indications, risks, downtime and qualification requirements.

Contraindications

Avoid treatment over active infection, herpes, inflamed acne, marked dermatitis, open wounds or impaired healing. Keloid tendency, immunosuppression, clotting disorders, anticoagulants, pregnancy and recent isotretinoin require assessment. Risks include infection, persistent redness, pigment change and scarring.
